Orthoptics
Orthoptic clinics in Cardiff & Vale Health Board offer a range of diagnostics and treatments, based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW) and Noah's Ark Children's Hospital. Direct referral for an orthoptic appointment can be made via an optometrist, a health visiting team, school nursing team or your G.P. practice.
The staff include orthoptists, optometrists, nurse practitioners and technicians who carry out specific roles within the team.
Children's orthoptic clinics are here to provide diagnosis and treatment for childhood squints (turns in eyes), amblyopia ( lazy vision) and any type of eye movement disorder or problem with visual development. The orthoptic clinic also leads the vision screening program carried out in schools as part of your child's health surveillance at reception year level.
Adults appointments are provided for assessment of squints, eye movement problems and diplopia ( double vision). Urgent assessments with the orthoptist may form part of a referral to the Eye Emergency Clinic at UHW. Patients are also seen within the orthoptic clinic for visual field testing and biometry (eye measurements) prior to cataract surgery.
Within our clinic we also run glaucoma monitoring appointments with our Advanced Optometrists and glaucoma practitioner team.
All orthoptists are Health and Care Professions Council ( HCPC) registered and we are happy to offer appointments in Welsh where Welsh speaking staff are available.
