The Surgical Hub is the home of day surgery at University Hospital Llandough. We are made up of two ward areas, the Day Surgery Unit and West 6. Most patients will be day case, but we have capacity for one-night stays if required.
The specialties that operate out of the surgical hub include: Colorectal, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Maxillo-facial and dental surgery, Ophthalmology, Pain management, Urology, and Vascular surgery.
You will have been given (or will receive) a date and time for you to arrive for your operation.
When you arrive in the department, you will be directed to the waiting area. Friends and relatives will not be able to accompany you due to limited space. If you feel you need to be accompanied, you can discuss this with the nurse in charge.
You will be greeted by our reception team who will check you in.
A Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) will take your observations and measure your height and weight. You may be asked for a urine sample.
Your nurse will go through a checklist with you to ensure that you are ready for theatre.
Your surgical team will see you to discuss your planned procedure and ensure you have given valid consent.
An anaesthetist will come and see you and go through the plans for anaesthetic and immediate post-op pain relief with you. If your procedure is under local anaesthetic you will not need to be seen by the anaesthetist.
