Electro Convulsive Therapy

Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) is a safe and effective treatment.  The ECT team provides care and treatment to service users — usually those with severe depression — in a modern clinical setting.

The ECT multidisciplinary team consists of:

  • A lead Consultant and Professor of Psychiatry
  • A Consultant Psychiatrist
  • An ECT Clinic Manager
  • A Deputy ECT clinic manager
  • A team of Registered Mental Health Nurses
  • A team of Consultant Anaesthetists and Anaesthetic Practitioners.
  • A team of Registered Nurses specialising in recovery from anaesthesia
  • Mental health support workers
  • Volunteers with a lived experience of ECT

The ECT service is based at Hafan y Coed, University Hospital Llandough and can be contacted on 029 2182 4756 / 4757 between 7.30am and 3.30pm on Monday to Friday. 

The service accepts referrals from teams working within mental health services.

The ECT service is accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists ECT Accreditation Service which sets standards for all aspects of ECT care in England, Wales and the Island of Ireland. The process for accreditation is rigorous.
