The Mental Health University Liaison Service or MHULS, is a team designed to work with students attending one of the 4 universities in Cardiff. Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, The University of South Wales and The Royal College of Music and Drama are all part of the South East Wales Partnership with the NHS to deliver mental health assessment to students of all ages in the Cardiff and Vale area.
A team of 4 mental health practitioners are based in Cardiff University most days but also attend the other 3 universities to work with the student wellbeing teams and students local to Cardiff and Vale. They work very closely with the many support services within each campus and with NHS teams to ensure a pathway of care is available to students in need of mental health support. The team will see all Cardiff and Vale students regardless of whether they are assigned a local GP.
Students cannot self-refer into MHULS but can access the team via referrals from all NHS services including GPs, A&E, community mental health teams and primary care teams, and from all 4 universities. The practitioners assess students and work with them to identify the most appropriate mental health care pathway or academic support option required to help them to achieve their goals. The partnership has a unique sharing agreement allowing us to share health information across all parties unless students opt out of this arrangement. This helps us to make sure that we are aware of, and are working together, to meet the needs of all service users.
