Counselling & Psychological Therapies for Depression

Counselling & Psychological Therapies for Depression

The Counselling & Psychological Therapies for Depression (CPTD) delivers one-to-one Psychological Therapies/Counselling for those patients who are identified as having symptoms consistent with low mood/depression

The service offers Evidence Based therapeutic interventions based on service user need. These include:

  • Counselling for Depression
  • Interpersonal Therapy for Depression

How would I get referred?

CPTD accepts referrals from Part 1 Mental Health services following an initial assessment.

This means that following an appointment with your GP, they will refer you for an assessment with the Primary Mental Health Support Service (PMHSS) who may identify a need for Counselling/Psychological Therapy for low mood/depression. If this is the case, you will be referred to CPTD

What happens following referral?

CPTD will review your referral details. If appropriate you will be added to our waitlist and, in time, contacted to arrange an initial appointment.

What happens in this face-to-face appointment?

You will meet a Counsellor/therapist from the team who will assess your needs.

If it is felt that we can offer you a suitable intervention, this will be arranged at the assessment.

If you and/or the counsellor/therapist believe that what we are able to offer won’t be helpful, they will help identify an alternative pathway.

Sometimes the counsellor/therapist will need to discuss the assessment with a Supervisor or Service Lead in order to make a decision. This will be communicated to you as soon as possible.

When and where do sessions take place?

CPTD is a “digital first” service offering access to online video consultations via Attend Anywhere. Face-to-face appointments across various locations within Cardiff and the Vale, can be offered to service users if needed.
