Acute Kidney Injury

AKI can have a range of causes and of severity. While less severe cases can be managed in the local hospital, more severe cases who may or may not need dialysis should be referred to the appropriate paediatric nephrology centre. Please refer to the guideline endorsed by your lead paediatric nephrology centre. The majority of children with AKI will have a pre-renal component and aggressive fluid resuscitation is important, while at the same time avoiding fluid overload if oliguria persists.

The main indications for dialysis are:

  • Fluid overload
  • Hyperkalaemia
  • Acidsi
Early discussion with a paediatric nephrologist of cases who have the potential to require dialysis is advised.
