Sustainable Dentistry

At the University Dental Hospital (UDH), we believe that ‘Good Dental care doesn’t have to cost the Earth’….

Did you Know?

The climate emergency remains one of the greatest health challenges of today with evidence on the impacts to both population health and the health system only growing.

NHS Dentistry accounts for approximately 3% of the NHS total carbon footprint .We need to reduce waste, save energy and work sustainability whilst providing the highest quality of dental care.

UDH is uniquely placed to respond to this need for sustainable change. We are the only teaching hospital in Wales. We educate the next generation of dentists, we provide care for patients with the most complex dental needs within Cardiff and Vale, we work with and collaborate with all Dental organisations within Wales. We are the right people in the right place to drive forward this sustainable change in dental care.

What are we doing about it?

Cardiff Dental School has worked closely with the hospital to:

Reduce Waste, make sustainable changes, increase awareness of the sustainability agenda through education

Sustainability is not just a buzzword- it’s our Mission!

What have we done so far?

We have worked with the Bevan Commission Embedding Sustainability in Wales' Sole Dental Hospital and School: Crafting the Narrative for Change - Bevan Commission to help achieve these aims.

We have completed on 15 sustainable projects to date.

For example:

Ø In Dental theatre services, we have reduced the number of patient cancellations

Ø We have reduced Carbon emissions associated with patient travel to appointments by offering virtual consultations

Ø Reduced waste by reducing the use of single use dental impression trays and single use dental mirrors

All these projects involved and were undertaken by dental students and NHS staff.

What can you do to help?

We want our patients – that’s YOU - to be part of this change.

Did you know…

For example, every missed dental appointment costs the Dental Hospital £194, so we want YOU to help the NHS by cancelling any appointments that you cannot attend so we can offer these to other patients.

BUT you can help in many more ways ………We have put together information that may help you make sustainable changes to your own dental health.

This information can help you support us on delivering the best dental care that doesn’t have to cost the Earth.
