The Sedation and Special Care Dentistry department provides dental care for adults who have one or more significant impairments which affect their ability to have dental treatment in a community setting.
These impairments may include severe medical complexity, learning disability, physical disability, severe mental health conditions, and sensory and processing conditions.
We may provide care in some circumstances under general anaesthesia or sedation. We also provide conscious sedation for anxious and phobic dental patients who require dental care. We also train other dentists and dental nurses in conscious sedation.
We work closely with a number of medical and dental specialities to plan safe and effective care. In addition, we often share care with our colleagues in the Community Dental Service and General Dental Service.
Once treatment has been completed, we discharge patients back to their dentist to have their examinations closer to home. If you, a friend or a relative has dental anxiety or phobia please ask for a leaflet from main reception.
