John's Campaign

What is John’s Campaign?

John’s Campaign advocates the rights of people with dementia in hospital to have their carers with them at any time. The Campaign was founded after the death of Dr John Gerrard in November 2014 by Nicci Gerrard and Julia Jones.

Cardiff and Vale University Heath Board is an acute tertiary site and through consultation with Senior Nurses a decision was made to adopt the principles of the Campaign rather than the Campaign in totality. The Campaign will be piloted on four wards to begin with and then rolled out in a phased approach.

As a Health Board we recognise the important role that all carers undertake, therefore, the principles of John’s Campaign that we aim to adopt will apply to all carers and not specifically those carers of people with Dementia.

What John’s Campaign principles will the Health Board be adopting?

The principles that the Health Board will be adopting are affiliated to the ‘Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014’. The elements are:

  • Early identification of unpaid carers
  • Ensuring unpaid carers have a voice, and that they are informed and communicated with
  • Ensuring that unpaid carers are always made to feel welcome on the wards and where possible we will support them to continue their caring role, if they wish and e.g. in mealtimes, personal care and medicines management etc.

However, we ask that unpaid carers respect other patients’ privacy, ward issues, such as closures, and tell us if they need our help and support.
