A brain scan may be necessary to investigate specific neurological conditions or to study the blood circulation to and from the brain (perfusion imaging).
Generally, no special preparation is needed. If special preparation is required, your doctor will let you know.
For a DAT scan, you will be required to take a medication to protect your thyroid gland for 5 days, starting on the day of your visit.
After relaxing in a dimly lit room, the tracer is injected in the arm.
Fifteen minutes after the injection, you will lie on your back under the camera and images of your brain will be acquired for 30 to 60 minutes.
You will be asked not to move, touch your head or cough while the pictures are being taken.
