Paediatric Neurosurgery

Paediatric neurosurgery is a sub-speciality within neurosurgery. Those departments offering paediatric neurosurgery have a number of Neurosurgeons with an interest and specialist training in paediatric neurosurgery. In Cardiff we have three paediatric Neurosurgeons, however, all the Neurosurgeons are trained to perform life saving neurosurgery on children when on call out of hours.

Paediatric neurosurgery is mainly an acute sub-speciality, with 70-80% of the workload being unscheduled. The main bulk of the work is related to hydrocephalus, trauma, brain and spinal tumours, spinal dysraphism and epilepsy.

Cardiff has a full time inpatient and a part time outreach paediatric Neurosurgical Clinical Nurse Specialist.
