We are made up of a team of Clinical Scientists, Respiratory Physiologists, Trainee Clinical Scientists, Associate and Assistant Respiratory Physiologists and Clerical staff.
Our Clinical Scientists and Respiratory Physiologists are registered with the RCCP (Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists) or the HCPC (Health and Care Professionals Council).
Head of Respiratory Physiology Services
Lois Attewell Lois has been a Respiratory Physiologist since 2013 and team leader since 2017, she is a HCPC registered Clinical Scientist and also has a Postgraduate certificate for teaching in Higher Education (PGCertTHE). She also teaches 1 day per week in Swansea University for their BSc. Healthcare Science programme. Lois’s main tasks within the department include management duties, driving forwards department improvements, leading Cardiopulmonary Exercise tests and leading Complex Sleep Apnoea clinics. |

Highly Specialised Respiratory Physiologists
Joelle Jones Joelle has been a Respiratory Physiologist since 2016 and a team leader since 2022. She is RCCP registered and currently working towards Clinical Scientist equivalence. Joelle’s main tasks within the department include leading of the Community Spirometry project, management tasks, leading Cardiopulmonary Exercise tests and leading Complex Sleep Apnoea clinics. |

Corey Davies Corey has been a Respiratory Physiologist since 2019 and graduated from MSc. Clinical Science (Respiratory and Sleep) and gained HCPC registration in 2023. He is piloting a new Physiologist-led Lung Function service for patients with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) as well as leading Cardiopulmonary Exercise tests and leading Complex Sleep Apnoea clinics. |

Esme Burge Esme has been a Respiratory Physiologist since 1996 and is the longest serving member of the department. She is RCCP registered and is currently taking on a 10 month secondment as a band 7, where her skills will be expanding into Complex Sleep Apnoea, Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing and management. |
Specialist Respiratory Physiologists
Harry Jones Harry has been a Respiratory Physiologist since 2020 and joined the department within the pandemic. He is RCCP registered. His current role includes Sleep Apnoea Testing and Treatment, Lung Function Testing, Challenge Testing and assisting Cardiopulmonary Exercise tests. Harry also has a large amount of input with the BSc. Healthcare Science students who attend the department on clinical placement. He is also the line manager of the Assistant Physiologists. |

Kate Howard Kate graduated from MSc. Clinical Science (Respiratory and Sleep) in 2024. Kate has a Physiotherapy background and embarked on Respiratory Physiology in 2021. Her role within the department includes Sleep Apnoea Testing and Treatment, Lung Function Testing, Challenge Testing and assisting Cardiopulmonary Exercise tests. |
Trainee Clinical Scientist
Jennifer Crawley Jennie joined the department in September 2023 as a trainee clinical scientist, and she is in the first year of an MSc. in Clinical Science in the subject of Respiratory and Sleep sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University. Jennie's background is originally in Zoology, having previously completing a PhD in Asian elephant physiology. She is mainly involved in carrying out lung function tests, sleep apnoea testing and treatment, and is learning to assist with the cardiopulmonary exercise tests. |

Savannah Preudhomme Savannah is in the 1st year of the MSc. Clinical Science (Respiratory and Sleep), hosted by Cardiff and Vale. She joined the department in September 2023 as a Trainee Clinical Scientist. She is in the 2nd year of the MSc. Clinical Science (Respiratory and Sleep) at Manchester Metropolitan University. Savannah has completed a master's degree in Respiratory Clinical Science from University College London and an undergraduate degree in Human Biology from the University of South Wales . Her current role includes carrying out lung function tests, assisting in cardiopulmonary exercise tests and sleep apnoea testing and treatment. |

Lizzie Umbers Lizzie has been a Respiratory Physiologist since 2023 and has recently completed the BSc. Healthcare Science (Respiratory and Sleep). She is RCCP registered. Her current role includes Lung Function Testing, Basic Challenge Testing, assisting Cardiopulmonary Exercise tests and Sleep Apnoea Diagnostics and CPAP therapy troubleshooting. |

Natasha Picton-Turbervill Natasha qualified from Swansea university with a BSc in Respiratory and Sleep physiology. She worked in a paediatric sleep and respiratory department in London for months prior to joining the team here in Cardiff and the Vale. Her current role includes Lung Function Testing, Basic Challenge Testing, assisting Cardiopulmonary Exercise tests and Sleep Apnoea Diagnostics and CPAP therapy troubleshooting. |
Assistant Respiratory Physiologist
Ipsita Pramanik Ipsita has been an Associate Respiratory Physiologist since 2024, although new to the team she also had experience working as a Respiratory therapist for 1 year beforehand and completed the MSc. Respiratory Medicine. She has also attained a teaching certification and completed an Associate Fellowship in Higher Education. Her role is performing Spirometry for both the Lung Function department and the Community Spirometry Service. She also performs reversibility, earlobe blood gases and Sleep Apnoea monitor issues and downloading. She is training to perform Full Lung Function tests. Aswathy Baby Aswathy has been an Assistant Respiratory Physiologist since 2023, although new to the team she also had experience as a Trainee Respiratory Therapist in India for 1 year beforehand. Her role is performing Spirometry for both the Lung Function department and the Community Spirometry Service. She also performs reversibility, earlobe blood gases and Sleep Apnoea monitor issues and downloading. |

Shannon Evans Shannon has been an Assistant Respiratory Physiologist since 2023, although new to the team she is currently in 3rd year of MSc, Sports, Health and Exercise Science. Her role is performing Spirometry for both the Lung Function department and the Community Spirometry Service. Peter Galvin Pete has been a Clerical Officer within the team since 2023, however he has 11 years of experience in administrative services within the NHS. His role within the department is primarily booking appointments for the Community Spirometry service, however he also provides administrative support to the UHL based Lung Function and Sleep Apnoea service. He meets and greets patients, creates bookings, receives telephone calls, adding to waiting lists and more! |

Damaris Darfour Dee has been a Clerical Officer within the team since 2023, however her background is in education and emotional wellbeing for children. Her role within the department is primarily booking appointments for the Lung Function and Sleep Apnoea service.
