Bank FAQ - Guide for Staff who are only employed as Bank

How am I able to find available shifts?

To find available shifts you have a number of options, you can: 

  • Ring the Temporary Staffing Department – 029 20716200

How can I book an available shift?

To book an available shift you can: 

  • Ring the Temporary Staffing Department – 02920 716200

How far in advance can I book a shift?

Depending on certain Clinical Areas some shifts are available as far as 4 weeks in advance

Am I able to work regular shifts in the same clinical area?

As long as the shift are available in that area, then yes.

Will I always know which clinical area I am allocated to?

As a bank nurse you generally choose where you want to work, but please note that on occasion you may be moved due to clinical need – Exceptions are when you are booked to a POOL shift.

Where should I direct my questions if I have a pay query?

Firstly it is advisable to always contact the clinical area you worked in, this is to check if that shift has been verified.

If your shift has been verified, then you need to contact the payroll department.

Will I have a pay slip?

Yes, you will be issued with a pay slip and it will get sent to your home address.

Will I be entitled to enhancements in my pay?

Depending on the type of shift you work, then you will be entitled to enhancements.

Pay rates are discussed at interview, but you can also find a copy on the Cardiff and Vale UHB intranet site under ‘Temporary Staffing Department’

Is it possible to cancel a shift in one clinical area, to work on another shift

Sorry but the answer is NO.

What if I need to cancel a shift?

If this happened ‘Out of Hours’ then please contact the ward you are book on to ASAP, and inform them you are not able to work the shift.

If this is in normal hours then please contact the Temporary Staffing Department. Please try and give as much notice as possibly to help us fill the shift you are canceling

What happens if I arrive for my shift, and I am not required?

If this happens out of hours the Site Practitioner will be contacted, and it is likely you will be moved to another clinical area.

During normal Temporary Staffing Department office hours, please ring the department.


If I have not worked a bank shift in the last 3 months – am I still a member of the bank or have I been removed?

If you haven’t worked a shift in 3 months, you will need to make contact with the Temporary Staffing Department first before booking any shifts.

What shift pattern will I work?

This will depend on what shift pattern the clinical areas release, but the majority of areas work a 12 hours shift pattern.

When is pay day?

This is dependent on if you chose to be paid weekly or monthly. The pay dates, along with the cut off dates for when your shifts need to be verified by can be found on the Rosterpro website. In addition please be mindful that it will depend on when your shifts get verified by the wards you have worked on.

The opt in for weekly pay would have been discussed at interview.

Also at interview you will be auto enrolled in the Cardiff and Vale UHB pension. If you don’t wish to be part of the pension scheme, you need to opt out.
