About Us

The Welsh Gender Service (WGS) was established in 2019 as a gender incongruence/gender dysphoria assessment and diagnosis service for adults living in Wales. The Welsh Gender Service operates a graduated model of care involving a network of local clinicians which means that post diagnosis care can usually be offered closer to home, via your Local Health Board.

The Welsh Gender Service is based in St David’s Hospital in Cardiff; appointments can take place at the Welsh Gender Service itself, or online, or at our North Wales satellite clinic in Holywell. There are plans for further satellite clinics to be set up by the end of 2025.

History of the Welsh Gender Service

The Welsh Gender Service was set up in 2017 and is based at St David’s Hospital in Cardiff with Local Gender Teams (LGT) based in each health board. The Welsh Gender Service includes a multidisciplinary administrative and clinical team, made up of Gender Clinicians, Endocrinology Consultants, Clinical Psychologists, and Specialist Nurses. We all work together to provide holistic patient-centred care focussing on hormonal, psychological, and social aspects of transition. The Local Gender Teams are made up of a doctor who oversees the prescribing of hormone therapies and have links with local speech and language teams, enabling people to get personalised care closer to where they live.
