Primary Care Referral Process

We mainly deal with urgent suspected cancers (USC) referrals where there are suspicious gynaecological signs and symptoms. We attempt to see our USC patients within 2 weeks of referrals and all referrals should be through the cancer referral centre (CRC). On receipt of the referral, we will triage the patient to be seen in either a rapid access clinic, or be downgraded to a non USC referral. The gynaecology rapid access clinics are:-

  •  Pelvic Mass clinic (alternate Friday mornings in Barry Hospital)
  • Post Menopausal Bleeding clinic ((Nurse lead) Weekly on Mondays - University Hospital of Wales)
  • Gynaeoncology rapid access clinic (consultant lead joint clinic – University Hospital of Wales every Wednesday morning)
We will contact the patient directly to arrange the appointment. As these clinics are very busy, please advise your patients that

  • They must make their best effort to attend unless there are extenuating circumstances.
  • They may have to wait a little longer in clinic as the clinic numbers vary depending on demand.
