Ocean Floor (Ground)

Seahorse Ward is the GP admission unit and provides open access for some of our children with long-term conditions

Starfish Outpatients caters for 22 Children's specialities including Orthopaedics / Complex Dental / Exercise Tolerance.

This area has an electronic booking-in system.  This has been developed in-house so that families can use their appointment letter to check in using one of the kiosks. The large TV screens will then inform the family when the doctor is ready to see them from one of the clinic rooms.

The volunteers will help you to use this system but do ask the receptionists if you need help. Please ensure your contact details are up to date when visiting all outpatient areas.

Dolphin Zone provides therapy for both inpatients and outpatients and includes the hydrotherapy pool which has additional sensory equipment to enhance the delivery of this therapy. Both physiotherapists and occupational therapists deliver care in this area.

Penguin Zone houses Audiology, ENT and Ophthalmology Services. This area includes services for the care of children requiring Cochlear Implant Specialist Services, and soundproofed observation rooms to enable the delivery of this service.

Octopus Zone is the Children's Radiology Department. This department houses MRI, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound and General X-ray facilities purpose-built for children.

LATCH Charity has generously supported this area and helped in the delivery of ambient lighting and additional facilities to make the child’s experience whilst in this department more interactive and enjoyable.

Land Floor (Upper Ground)

The Pelican Zone cares for children with cardiac and renal conditions. All the rooms have water systems so that haemodialysis can be delivered in all bays. There is also one dark room for ECHO examinations.

Pelican Zone joins with Island Ward, which is one of the medical wards.

The second medical ward is Jungle Ward which is located in Phase One so all medical children are located across one floor. This ward cares for all medical cases and children requiring tertiary medical care such as sleep studies and long term ventilation. Neuro-telemetry services are provided by this ward.

The ward mainly comprises single rooms, all with en-suite facilities (wet rooms to enable direct wheelchair access for the long term / complex needs children). The bedrooms have pull-down beds for parents to stay alongside their child. Parents also have facilities including sitting rooms and small kitchens for their convenience.

There is a large family room, counselling rooms and sensory rooms on both medical and surgical floors.

This floor also houses our new multi-faith facility, equipment library, speciality feed kitchen and the main Children's kitchen.

Noah's Ark Charity offices are located on Land Floor.

Sky Floor (First)

Owl Ward is the Surgical Ward which has 14 beds for day surgery cases and 28 beds for acute inpatient surgical care. The close proximity of children’s theatres makes the children’s surgical pathway more efficient and more child friendly, as the children are able to remain in the playrooms until the anaesthetist is ready to start. The journey from recovery is significantly shortened as the wards are next to each other.

There is a school room for longer-term children and a therapy room for children who are inpatients and too unwell to go to the therapy suite on the ground floor.

The surgical inpatient ward has large open four-bedded areas so that the children can be easily observed post-operatively.

There are a number of cubicles for the long-term children who “live” on the ward for some time for their rehabilitation, all with en-suite wet room facilities.

As on Land Floor, there are parents' pull-down beds, counselling facilities and parents' rooms on this floor alongside the inpatient beds.

Enfys / Rainbow Oncology Ward specialises in the treatment and care of children with cancer and haematological disorders. We are the lead centre for South Wales and cover the whole area of Wales south of Aberystwyth. We are a 9 bedded ward and provide up-to-date, evidence-based practice to ensure the best possible care for children and young people in a safe and caring environment.

Rainbow Daybeds have their own treatment room and a 6 bedded area attached to the main ward which is used for children needing daily treatments such as chemotherapy, blood transfusions and investigations. There is also an Anaesthetic Room / Theatre which is used one day per week for treatments that require a general anaesthetic.

Both areas have their own playroom and play specialist.

Space Floor (Second)

Space Floor houses the Children's Theatre Suite and Rocket Oncology Outpatients (which is not accessible from the Theatre Suite).

Children's Theatre Suite

The Children's Theatre Suite is operational during daytime hours only.

There are six theatres, four of which are already operational:

  • Theatre 1 Trauma and Orthopaedic
  • Theatre 2 Dental / Day Cases / Endoscopy
  • Theatre 3  CEPOD (non-elective emergency surgery) for children
  • Theatre 5 accommodates the potential additional activity which will come across from other acute paediatric centres.
  • Theatre 4 Children’s General Surgery
  • Theatre 6 ENT, Ophthalmology
  • Theatre 5 requires additional funding to facilitate completion. Once operational, it will be able to accommodate the potential additional activity which will come across from other acute paediatric centres

The Children's Theatre Suite also provide:

  • A dedicated recovery area with 8 bays which children visit post-operatively
  • A child-friendly holding bay which will include an additional small play area,
  • parents' waiting areas and discussion rooms to enable surgeons/anaesthetists to talk with families confidentially when their children are called to the theatres,
  • an examination room to enable children to be seen immediately prior to emergency surgery by an anaesthetist/surgeon who may otherwise be unable to go to the ward to see children pre-operatively.

Teaching Facilities

Theatres 3 and 4 are purpose-built integrated theatres which enable the viewing and teaching of complex endoscopy procedures. The viewing screens feedback to the teaching area to enable staff to view specialised procedures without being in the theatre itself. This often gives the student a better overhead view and reduces infection control risks.

Rocket Outpatients

Oncology and Haematology Outpatients see children with cancer and non-malignant and haemoglobinopathy disorders.  As a department, we treat approximately 75 new children with cancer, leukaemia and brain tumours a year from Wales.

Clinics

  • 2 solid tumour clinics (Tuesday AM and Friday AM)
  • 1 non-malignant haematology clinic (Monday AM)
  • 2 malignant haematology clinics (Tuesday PM & Wednesday AM)
  • 1 orthopaedic clinic that is run by a visiting consultant every three months.
  • 1 brain tumour clinic every month
  • We are the central point for communications for patients, families and other professionals.

We work with many other teams of doctors and nurses in the hospital.  Our team includes nurses (on the unit and in the community), doctors, Data Office staff, LATCH social workers, play specialists, psychologists, a dietician, a physiotherapist and a pharmacist.

Star Floor (Third)

Star Floor houses the Children's Critical Care Unit, Outpatient Psychology and the Teaching Suite.

Children's Critical Care Unit

The Children's Critical Care Unit has 15-bed spaces.   This includes two double-bedded bays for children who either require isolation or who are inpatients for a number of months due to the complexity of their condition.

One of the two-bedded bays has both negative and positive pressure air systems to enable high-risk children to be isolated.

Each bed area has purpose-made pendant systems with integrated supplies within.  One bed area has a hoist mechanism on the critical care end with four within the high dependency end to enable manoeuvring of the rehabilitating child and to enable them to mobilise whilst recovering and to use the bathroom with minimal manual handling.

The Unit has been designed to enable easy observation of all clinical areas whilst ensuring children with high dependency do not have a good view of the children requiring critical care.

The Unit provides a transport service across South, West and Mid Wales, with children from North Wales going to Alder Hey Hospital. All children requiring critical care (other than those requiring cardiac surgery, burns care or specialist liver care) will be cared for in this Unit.

This floor contains a Star Bridge to enable staff to access Phase One, and the Star Link back to the main hospital to enable the moving of children from main theatres, children having neurosurgery or emergency surgery out of hours, and children coming from the Emergency Unit requiring critical care. Neonates will also be moved across this link to the Children's Theatre floor.
