EEG (Electroencephalogram) test information

This is a simple and painless test from which the electrical activity from the brain is recorded from the scalp by electrodes.

Routine EEG

This is a painless and harmless investigation lasting approximately 1 hour and involves placing a number of small discs on your scalp to record the electrical activity of your brain. During the test you may also be asked to do some deep breathing and look at a flashing light, for which your consent will be required and will be discussed during your appointment. In the case of a child, a signature will be required on the day from a parent or legal guardian.

It is important that your hair is clean and free of hair products. It would be helpful if you could wash your hair the night before the test and you will need to do so again after you return home.

If the patient is a baby or child, it would be helpful if mum or dad could bring a drink/toy/video.

Please continue with your usual medication. A written list of what you take would be helpful for the physiologist.

Prolonged EEG

Sometimes after a routine EEG we may send you another appointment for a prolonged EEG.  This will be the same procedure but will record for a few hours. Please bring some food and drink and with you and wear comfortable clothing.  You may also wish to bring a DVD or book with you.

Ambulatory EEG

On this occasion the electrodes are left on for a 24 hour period. The discs are attached to the scalp by glue. They are connected to a small recorder worn on a belt around the waist.

It will take approximately 1-2 hours to apply and set up. Wearing loose-necked, button through or clothing with zips will allow you to change your shirt or blouse more easily.

It will be necessary to wear a T-shirt to which the leads are secured using sticky tape. Please make sure that your hair is clean and free from hair products.  Supervision of a child will be required at all times whilst wearing this equipment.

You will need to attend the following day for removal of the equipment.

Sleep Deprived EEG

For the test to be a success it is necessary for you to be deprived of 4 hours of sleep. If you normally have 8 hours sleep, you should only have 4 hours on the night before the test. If you normally have seven hours, then only have 3 hours sleep and so on. If you only have 4 hours sleep, please do not sleep on the night before the test. Please do not sleep on the morning of the test.

Please have some food before your arrival in the department for your test. Do not have drinks of tea, coffee or alcohol from midnight on the night of the test. You may continue to have soft drinks that do not contain caffeine.

See more about the test in our patient leaflets.
