About Neurophysiology

The staff in the Neurophysiology Department diagnose and monitor conditions affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems and eyes such as epilepsy, nerve entrapments, visual disorders.

They do this by measuring the electrical activity of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.  A range of tests that chart different brain and neurological activities can be conducted to record:

  • Electrical impulses in the brain (Electroencephalogram).
  • Electrical signals passing along nerves in the limbs (Nerve Conduction Studies).
  • Electrical activity in muscles (Electromyogram).
  • Responses of the brain and spinal cord to evoked potentials.
  • Response of the retina (eye) to light stimulation.

The service covers South East Wales.  The more common tests are offered locally at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, St Woolos Hospital in Gwent, and Prince Charles and  Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Cwm Taf.

The department at the University Hospital is based on the fourth floor between A and B blocks.  The service is supported by Consultant Neurophysiologists and Clinical Physiologists.

Most of our work is in providing an outpatient service although we provide an inpatient service for those who require urgent tests.

A Video EEG (electroencephalogram) monitoring service is provided on ward C4 Neurology at the University Hospital of Wales.
