Services for Asylum Seekers

📍 Who is this service for?

This service is for people who are:

  • Waiting for a decision from the Home Office
  • Living in temporary housing (called Section 98 support)
  • Not yet registered with a GP

❤️ What is CAVHIS?

The Cardiff & Vale Health Inclusion Service (CAVHIS) is a health service based at Cardiff Royal Infirmary. It helps people who are new to the UK seeking asylum or refuge and may not have a GP yet.

The team offer:

  • Health checks
  • Help registering with a local GP when you move into more stable housing (called Section 95 support)

🩺 What happens at your first appointment?

When you come to the CAVHIS clinic, you will have an Initial Health Assessment with a nurse or health visitor. This includes:

  • Questions about your physical and mental health
  • A basic health check

You will be offered:

  • Blood tests for infections and common health problems
  • Sexual health screening
  • Help with any urgent health needs

We also give you:

  • Information about the NHS in Wales
  • Advice in your preferred language (we use telephone interpreters if needed)

👨‍⚕️ What other care can we offer?

If needed, we can also:

  • Book an appointment with a doctor or nurse
  • Refer you to a hospital for urgent care
  • Give you vaccines based on your age and health
  • Cervical screening

👶 Services for Children and Families

Health Visitors support children aged 0–5 and assess health needs for children aged 5–17 who arrive in Cardiff. Midwives help with care during and after pregnancy. They also offer support for safeguarding and FGM screening.
