Operational Changes to CMHT's – The Weekend Community Mental Health Nurse Service

7 March 2024

The weekend CPN (Community Psychiatric Nurse) service will be coming to an end on April 30th 2024.

Why is the weekend service changing?

The weekend CPN service was created during a time where two psychiatric services for adults existed. These were either inpatient admissions or community care. This meant at the time of its establishment there was no provision for community patients during weekends.

Mental health services have since evolved with the development of 7 day a week services such as Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Teams, Focused Outreach and Recovery Teams and most recently 111 press 2. With this expanding service provision, along with the increase in third sector organisations, the use of the weekend CPN service has seen a steady and consistent decline.

What are the Benefits for Patients?

  • Community Mental Health Nurses will no longer be rostered to staff this service allowing for additional time to support the recovery of those under their care in CMHT’s during core weekday hours.
  • Newly established services operate on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis enabling better access across a an all-encompassing time scale.

We will be hosting an in-person drop-in session which will be open to individuals eligible to receive this service. This will be an opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding the service change.
