Charlotte works within the Artificial Limb and Appliance Service at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. After working in the prosthetics industry from the age of 18 and working her way up over the years, she is now a Lead Prosthetic Technician. Everyday Charlotte and her team help to improve the lives of people living with a permanent or long-term impairment, delivering high-quality, patient-centred prosthetic care that supports everyday independence.
At the end of 2025, a year which marked 10 years in the industry for Charlotte, she was named Technician of the Year by the British Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics.
The Artificial Limb and Appliance Service provide assessment and provision of equipment for essential posture and mobility needs for disabled people. Services are provided on a lifetime basis and is made up of a multi-disciplinary team who work with contractors and suppliers to maximise users’ potential for rehabilitation into the community.
Charlotte was nominated by three of her previous colleagues in Cambridge following her involvement in the service’s relocation project. Her nomination mentioned leadership, dedication, creativity and passion for the industry.
“I started working in prosthetics when I was 18, straight from sixth form. My Dad is a bilateral below-knee amputee so I have had an interest in prosthetics for as long as I can remember, for me there was no other option career wise than prosthetics.”
“The thing I enjoy the most about prosthetics is getting the best possible outcome for our patients and knowing that we have made a difference to someone's daily life - from manufacture to ensuring parts are here on time for appointments” Charlotte says.
More than 95% of what the team provide is manufactured on site at the purpose-built centre at Rookwood Hospital in Llandaff, Cardiff. This means that the prosthetics team have been able to work closely with technicians to find the best possible solution for their patients.
“It feels really special to have been nominated and to win this award, especially this year, marking a whole decade in the industry!” Charlotte says. “It’s a lovely way to celebrate my journey so far, and I’m grateful to be recognised among such talented colleagues.”
Clinical Lead Prosthetist Heather Bassett at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board commented: “this recognition reflects Charlotte’s outstanding expertise and the dedication she brings to her new Lead Technician role here in Cardiff.
“Her commitment to supporting the Prosthetic Clinicians, delivering exceptional care and driving innovation within the prosthetic technical team showcases the very best of Cardiff and Vale. It also demonstrates the exceptional calibre of talent and high level of expertise within our prosthetic technical service, which proudly supports the amputee community across Southeast Wales.”
Charlotte is looking forward to continuing her work in prosthetics, bringing together everything she has learnt so far to improve outcomes for the population of Cardiff and Vale.
