The Teddy Bear Nurseries

We are very fortunate in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to have two workplace day-care nurseries.

One up to a 60-place nursery at the University Hospital of Wales and an up to 30-place nursery based at the University Hospital Llandough site. Both nurseries care for children aged from 3 months to 5 years and are open from 8:00 am (or 7:00am at an extra cost) to 6:00 pm.

Childcare Funding Choices

The choices that parents have in terms of funding their childcare arrangements are Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credits and Funded Childcare Places. The HMRC website will help all parents make an informed decision on their options open to them.

Tax-Free Childcare

This is equivalent of the tax most people pay - 20% - which gives the scheme its name, ‘tax-free’. The Government will top up the account with 20% of childcare costs up to a total of £10,000 - the equivalent of up to £2,000 support per child per year (or £4,000 for children with additional needs).  Further information is available on the Gov.UK website.

Childcare Offer

The Welsh Government wants its childcare offer to be as clear and easy to access as possible so that parents of children age 3 and 4 years can continue to choose the providers that best suit their needs. Parents will receive a combined total of 17.5 hours of early education and childcare during term time.

The current free early education provided by the Curriculum for Wales will form part of this offer. For 9 weeks of the year, outside of term time, parents will receive 30 hours per week of childcare. The remaining 4 weeks are non-funded, at Teddy Bears this equates to the month of August.

For further information on any of the funding choices, please contact Suzanne Toft, UHB Senior Childcare Manager, at Suzanne.Toft@wales.nhs.uk or UHL ext. 26884 or 02921 826884.
