What is a PET / CT Scan?

An imaging technique that uses small quantities of a radioactive injection to produce information about the anatomy (CT) and function (PET) of your internal organs in a dedicated scanner.

Preparing for your scan

On the day of your scan

You should arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time and please report to the main Radiology department reception.

What happens during my scan?
  • During the scan you will be lying flat on your back with your arms by your side
  • The imaging table will move through the scanner during the examination
  • Most scans take 20-30 minutes
  • Expect to be in the department for at least 2 hours

What happens after my scan?

Once the scan is completed you are able to change back into your own clothes and are free to leave.

Results

The PET/CT staff cannot issue the results.

Our clinicians will review your scan and issue a report to your referring doctor in the first instance.

Important Information regarding this examination

Production of the radioactive tracer occurs every morning and is extremely complex.
