Pain Management (Acute)

The Acute Pain Management Service aims to ensure patients with acute pain are managed appropriately within the inpatient environment.

Pain relief is incredibly important as the adverse effects of unrelieved acute pain can be psychological, physiological and socio-economic.  Therefore, through a nurse-led service we aim to respond efficiently, offering specialist advice and support within the hospital.

What we provide

  • Expert specialist knowledge.
  • Liaison between a range of health professionals to optimise pain management.
  • Assessment of pain.
  • Sophisticated methods of pain relief (epidural, PCA, NCA, intrathecal opioids, local anaesthetic blocks etc).
  • Management of patients with complex pain management problems e.g. patients with opioid tolerance due to long-term opioid consumption, patients with drug and substance misuse problems, patients with chronic pain who develop acute pain problems.
  • Audit and research projects.
  • Support for patients and their families.
  • Information giving.
  • Multidisciplinary education (within the Health Board and external venues).
