Careers in Neurophysiology

Neurophysiology is concerned with the investigation of function in the central and peripheral nervous system.

If you are a Healthcare Scientist working in neurophysiology, you’ll be a specialist practitioner investigating the function of the nervous system to diagnose and monitor neurological disorders, including:

  • epilepsy
  • strokes
  • dementia
  • nerve and muscle dysfunction
  • multiple sclerosis.

If you work in this area of healthcare science, you’ll carry out investigations in dedicated environments or departments, in intensive care settings and in operating theatres. You’ll work directly with inpatients and outpatients of all ages (babies, children and adults).  There are a number of levels of entry into neurophysiology.

Assistant technical officer (ATO)

Under supervision, the ATO assists clinical physiologists and consultants with a range of neurophysiological investigations. This role calls for a basic secondary education, excellent attention to detail and good communication skills.

Practitioner training programme (PTP)

Students undertake a three year full time BSc honours in Healthcare Science specialising in the neurosensory pathway. Work placements are undertaken in audiology, visual science and neurophysiology, developing an understanding in all areas. Students are trained to perform and interpret a range of basic neurophysiological investigations to a high level of competence. Academic requirements for the BSc in Healthcare Science are four GCSEs (Grade A-C) including Maths, English Language and Dual Science (or equivalent) and two 2 A levels (including two science subjects) or equivalent.

PgCert Neurophysiology (Accredited Specialist Scientific Practice Programme - ASSP)

This is a work based programme and you must be employed within a neurophysiology department. Trainees should have a minimum of 3-months service within a neurophysiology department prior to starting the programme. A first or upper second class honours degree in Clinical Physiology or equivalent in a Life Sciences based subject eg chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, pharmaceutical technology, pharmacology, physiology, physical science subject is required or, when outside the UK, a degree or qualification deemed to be at least of equivalent standing.

Scientist Training Programme (STP)

STP training can be undertaken following PTP training or via direct entry with an appropriate degree, experience and professional qualifications. An MSc in Healthcare Science with Neurosensory specialism lasting three years is undertaken whilst working in a neurophysiology department allowing application of underpinning knowledge and gaining valuable experience. Personal and professional development is encouraged and supported to enable staff to achieve their aspirations.

Chartered Scientist Neurophysiology

Qualified professionals manage, plan, perform, develop and interpret a range of basic and advanced neurophysiological investigations. This is a progression from PTP and then STP or equivalents with relevant experience and professional qualifications.
