A variety of different endoscopy procedures are performed within Cardiff and Vale UHB. They may be undertaken to investigate and diagnose a cause for your symptoms or to undertake a treatment (therapeutic procedure). The most commonly performed procedures are outlined below:
- Bronchoscopy – examination of your airways (lungs).
- Capsule endoscopy – examination of your small bowel using a tablet sized capsule.
- Colonoscopy – examination of your large bowel (colon).
- EBUS (Endobronchial ultrasound) – examination of the lungs and surrounding tissue using a special ultrasound probe.
- EUS (Endoscopic ultrasound) – examination of the gullet, bile ducts, pancreas gland or rectum using a special ultrasound probe.
- Gastroscopy (also called an upper GI endoscopy or OGD) – examination of the gullet, stomach and first part of your small bowel called the duodenum.
- PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) – feeding tube inserted into the stomach through the abdominal wall.
- Sigmoidoscopy – examination of the left side of your large bowel (colon).
Some procedures are only performed on one of the hospital sites due to their specialist nature and specific equipment required.
Bowel cancer screening colonoscopy procedures are performed at University Hospital Llandough. This hospital also provides a regional service for complex endoscopy procedures (eg removal of large polyps).
