'Without her calm reassurance, I wouldn't have been able to have the scan that I very much needed' | Meet February's Health Hero

Emma Morris, a Radiology Assistant at University Hospital Llandough, has been named February’s Health Hero in recognition of the exceptional care and compassion she showed to a patient during an MRI scan.  

Emma has worked for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board for more than 10 years, starting in Main X-Ray before moving to MRI. Her role involves preparing patients for their scans, ensuring the treatment room is ready for the day, and supporting patients throughout their appointment. 

Speaking about her profession, Emma said:  

“Some patients become emotional because of the types of scans we do. Many are having breast cancer screening or are waiting for a diagnosis, so we see people at a very vulnerable time. I always make sure their family members are supported too, because it affects everyone, not just the patient. 

“We have such a tight-knit team here that it gives me the time to spend a little extra with people if they need it.” 

Emma added:  

“I love the team I work with, and I enjoy meeting new people every day. Some patients are very young, others need more support as they’re older, but I enjoy listening to their stories.” 

Emma was nominated by a patient, who wrote:  

“Today I needed to have an MRI at Llandough Hospital. I am extremely claustrophobic, and I explained this to Emma, who did her best to reassure me. When I arrived for my appointment, Emma and two radiologists talked me through the process and assured me I would be fine. 

“I entered the machine and panicked to the point where I had to come out. I was crying and felt silly, and this was before the scan had even started. Emma assured me it wasn’t a problem and offered to give me time to take some medication while they scanned the next patient.” 

When the patient returned, Emma provided additional support to help make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible. The patient added: 

“Emma held my hand throughout the scan. I cannot thank her enough. Without her calm reassurance, I wouldn’t have been able to have the scan that I very much needed.” 

Reflecting on the nomination, Emma said:  

“I was really shocked to receive this nomination. I work hard and always treat patients how I would want to be treated, with care and compassion. If they need extra support, they’ll always get it.  

“I’m overwhelmed to have been nominated for something that just feels like I'm doing my job. It’s lovely to be recognised, and I'm glad I could make a difference to the patient’s experience, especially when they were so nervous.”
