St David's Day 2026

Daffodils

01 March 2026

As the patron saint of Wales, Saint David's Day is celebrated on the 1st of March every year.

Saint David’s day gives us all an opportunity to reflect about what it means to be Welsh and to celebrate Welsh history, language and culture.

Colleagues across the organisation have been telling us what the day means to them. Many have recounted fond memories of school Eisteddfod, dressing up in traditional wear and eating Welsh cakes.

Tracey Pugh from the Mental Health team said: “One of my favourite St David's Day memories comes from school. We would always have a half day to mark the celebration, and the morning was filled with Eisteddfod competitions and prizes for creating Welsh-themed crafts. I loved wearing my Welsh costume with pride to honour St David and feel part of the tradition.”

Those who lived outside of Wales as children are still keen to get involved. One colleague told us about their experience of singing with BBC Now surrounded by daffodils and learning the words to Welsh songs.

We heard from a Welsh learner in the Health Board: “I grew up in England, but I’ve been learning Welsh for just over a year. I don’t have any traditions yet, but I’d like to make some. I love taking part in Welsh culture.”

Overwhelmingly, colleagues told us they love celebrating St David’s Day as a chance to celebrate their Welsh heritage, culture and traditions.

Molly Freeman, Medical and Dental Staff Bank Officer told us: “The day makes me feel patriotic and proud to be Welsh!”

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is a proudly Welsh organisation and colleagues will happily be celebrating the day by flying the St David’s cross outside of hospital settings, and hosting a special menu at Y Gegin, University Hospital Wales, on the day.

We aim to achieve an environment that encourages and promotes the use of the Welsh language within the Health Board for our Welsh speaking patients, their families and carers, and Welsh speaking members of the public to feel at home.

We hope everyone has a great St David’s Day, no matter how they choose to celebrate.
