'She's made a lasting difference not only to my mam's recovery but to our family's healing as well'| Meet December's Health Hero

Ffion Evans, a Staff Nurse in Cardiology, has been named December’s Health Hero in recognition of the exceptional care and compassion she showed to a patient and their relatives during their mother’s recovery following a cardiac arrest.

Ffion qualified as a nurse in 2024 after graduating in May and has been working on Ward B1, Cardiology at the University Hospital of Wales since September 2024. Her role involves caring for patients who have had heart attacks, cardiac arrests, arrhythmias, and heart failure.

Ffion was nominated by a patient’s relative for the outstanding care she provided during their mother’s recovery from a cardiac arrest, the fitting of two stents, and the insertion of a pacemaker.

The relative wrote: “from the moment she cared for my mam, it was clear that Ffion is an outstanding nurse. She not only provided expert clinical care but also treated my mother with patience, kindness, and genuine empathy. She took time to explain what was happening, offered reassurance, and helped my mam regain her confidence after such a frightening experience.

“What made Ffion truly special was the way she supported us as a family. She understood that we had been through a traumatic event and recognised how scared and vulnerable we were. Her warmth, compassion, and understanding brought us great comfort — she always made sure we were informed, listened when we needed to talk, and made us feel supported every step of the way.

“Ffion’s professionalism and empathy made a lasting difference not only to my mam’s recovery but to our family’s healing as well. She is an amazing nurse and a true credit to her profession. We will always be grateful for the exceptional care she provided during such a difficult time.”

Reflecting on the nomination, Ffion said: “Our patients are incredible. Having a heart condition or experiencing a cardiac event is terrifying, and the strength they show is just unbelievable.

“I couldn’t believe it when I received this nomination. I was so humbled that someone would take the time to write something like that about me, I’m just doing my job. It was incredibly kind of them to acknowledge the specifics, and that I made them feel more confident and reassured. Taking the time to talk to people and educate them really can improve their experience in hospital.”

Ffion added:

“The nomination is not just a reflection of me but also of the team as a whole. I’m so lucky to be part of this team - my colleagues are amazing. I’m quite newly qualified, and the education and support they provide is just brilliant. it's a privilege to work amongst a dedicated, compassionate team that makes a real difference to patient's lives.”

Health Hero is sponsored by Park Plaza Cardiff. As December’s Health Hero, Ffion will receive a traditional afternoon tea for two.
