"Nothing was too much trouble" | Meet August's Health Hero

Ellie Jones, a Staff Nurse on the Acute Stroke Unit at University Hospital of Wales, has been named August's Health Hero after being nominated by a patient's wife for the care and support she provided following her husband's stroke, aged just 38.

Ellie joined Cardiff and Vale University Health Board almost two years ago as a newly qualified nurse. After completing a student placement on the Acute Stroke Unit, she enjoyed it so much that she decided to stay after qualifying.

Ellie looks after patients in the early stages of stroke, providing specialist care, monitoring and treatment, often within hours of them arriving at hospital.

Ellie was nominated by a patient's wife, who wanted to recognise the difference she made during her husband's stay on the ward. She said:

"This nurse in particular was caring for my husband when he came through A&E after having a stroke. He was admitted to C4 Stroke Ward, where he was looked after by Ellie. My husband is only 38 years of age and he's never experienced being ill or being in hospital before, so he was scared and couldn't understand what was happening to him.

"She took time out to explain to him what was happening and what treatments he needed and why, even though she was busy. And with the endless questions my husband had, she took time to sit and explain everything to him, which made him feel so much more at ease.

"She was extremely knowledgeable and even did little things like changing his blood pressure cuff to a different size to make him more comfortable. She was kind and funny and honestly helped him feel more relaxed during his stay on the ward.

"Nothing was too much trouble, and she even took the time to get to know him. She made him feel less embarrassed about being so young on a stroke ward. I work for the Health Board myself and am surrounded by good nurses, and I have to say she stood out for me when I came to visit because of how good she was at her job."

One of the things Ellie enjoys most about her role is spending time with patients and helping them understand what is happening to them.

Ellie said: "Being able to just sit and chat with them and put patients at ease, I think that's just my favourite part of it."

Ellie also spoke about the importance of taking time to listen and explain things to patients and their families.

"Being that person who's able to sit down and spend time with the patients is so important", Ellie said.

Speaking about the nomination, Ellie said:

"I rang my manager and I was like, 'Are you sure? Are you sure it's not somebody else?

"I just didn't believe it. I feel very proud."

Ellie said empathy is at the heart of the care she provides.

"If that was me or my family member, I'd want them to have the utmost care and respect. I'd want them to do everything for them and just make sure they're comfortable."

She also thanked the patient and family who took the time to nominate her.

"Just thank you. I didn't expect it and I'm very grateful."
