'He approaches every task with enthusiasm and pride' | Meet this month's Health Hero

David Keohane, a Housekeeper at the University Dental Hospital in Cardiff, has been named January’s Health Hero for his positive attitude and exceptional attention to detail.

David joined Cardiff and Vale University Health Board almost two years ago after working as a school cleaner for Cardiff Council and spending two decades in security roles. He initially worked on the wards at the University Hospital of Wales, and since May 2025 has been responsible for cleaning the first floor of the Dental Hospital.

He speaks passionately about his daily work routine, which begins at 6.30am preparing equipment before cleaning the Orthodontic Clinic. This includes removing orthodontic wax from floors and emptying bins. He then moves to the waiting room to clean toys, sanitise chairs, mop floors and ensure the toilets are ready for use.

“Then I clean the Paediatric clinics, the offices, scrub down the corridors and everything else as the day goes on,” he said. “Sometimes I have unexpected things that pop up, which puts back my routine. But I always try and make sure that these core tasks are covered.”

Speaking about his profession, he added: “We are the unseen hidden army. The public only notice it when it’s not been done.”

David was nominated by Beverly Withers, Directorate Manager of the Dental Hospital, who wrote: “His dedication to maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and infection control has been pivotal in creating a safe and welcoming environment for patients and staff alike.

“David consistently goes above and beyond his role, responding promptly to urgent requests and demonstrating exceptional flexibility to the changing needs of our clinical areas. His meticulous attention to detail and professionalism have significantly supported patient care and staff wellbeing.

“What sets David apart is his positive attitude and willingness to help others. He approaches every task with enthusiasm and pride, fostering a culture of teamwork and reliability.”

Responding to the nomination, David said: “That’s a lovely recommendation. Thank you very much.”

He added: “I take pride in my job. It’s in my nature. I don’t know if I could do this job if I didn’t enjoy it. I’m pleased to be here, with the dental team. Anything you do, the management team notice. They are always encouraging and, any problems, you sort out as a team. You don’t feel like you’re on your own. It’s a team effort.”

“I like to give value for my service. I am Diabetic Type 1 so if I’m not active my blood sugars rise. If I’m too active my blood sugars will drop, so for me it’s always a question of balance. Throughout the day I give my best, and then I rectify accordingly. And I think that’s what really pushes me to go as far as I can.”
