Changes to hospital visiting arrangements at Cardiff and Vale sites

When somebody is in hospital, we know that visits from friends, family and loved ones can mean all the difference. This is why visiting arrangements at our hospitals have been updated, designed to make visiting hospital as easy as possible, whilst ensuring patients, staff and visitors are kept safe. 

From Monday 17th August 2026, patients at University Hospital of Wales, University Hospital Llandough, St David's Hospital and Barry Hospital can enjoy visits from up to two people at a time between an extended timeframe of 11am- 9pm. 

New arrangements will see the end to protected mealtimes, as we know that patients may eat and drink better when supported by a family member, friend or other dedicated support person. 

General visiting arrangements will follow the guidelines below: 

• Visitors should not attend if they, or any member of their household, are experiencing symptoms of illness. 

• Each patient may have a maximum of two visitors per visit. 

• General visiting hours are between 11 am and 9 pm. 

• Visits after 9 pm are permitted only in exceptional circumstances and must be agreed with the Ward Manager or Nurse in Charge. 

• Visitors must wash or sanitise their hands when entering and leaving both the hospital and the ward. 

• Visitors must wear a face covering, unless medically exempt, if asked to do so by Health Board staff. 

For patients attending outpatient appointments, the Emergency Unit or an Assessment Department, the Health Board will allow one companion to accompany them if required. Space in waiting areas is limited and priority is given to patients requiring care. 

Every patient's situation is unique, and where additional support is needed, healthcare teams can agree personalised attendance plans to ensure those who matter most can continue to be involved in their loved one’s care. Attendance plans must be agreed with ward staff and recorded in the patient’s medical records. 

Please note that some specialist areas, such as Maternity and Critical Care, will have their own local guidance in place. 

These changes are designed to make it easier for family and friends to spend time with loved ones in hospital, while continuing to protect patients, visitors and staff.
