'Amy was simply outstanding' | Meet our March Health Hero

Amy Edwards, a Staff Nurse on the Protected Elective Surgical Unit at the University Hospital of Wales, has been named March’s Health Hero in recognition of the diligence and compassion she showed to a patient during an especially difficult time.

The patient who nominated Amy said: “Whilst everyone on Ward C6 were very good, Amy was simply outstanding. She quickly understood that I was mentally struggling as I ended up having two operations instead of one. So physically and mentally I was very weak.

“How she managed to do everything her role required yet still seem like she had all the time to look after my difficulties was unbelievable. My family noted her diligence when they visited, and I cannot thank her enough. Please recognise her work ethic, compassion and value for me, and others, who I could see she was making a visible difference to.”

Amy has been working on Ward C6 since October, having qualified as a nurse last summer. The ward primarily cares for patients undergoing planned elective surgery, often as part of treatment following a cancer diagnosis. The team supports patients as they prepare for theatre, and cares for them after their operation, including pain management and emotional support after being given the results of their surgery.

Amy said: “Patients are often at their most vulnerable when they’re going through surgery, so being able to support them not only through the physical demands of surgery but also the emotional challenges surrounding it, is incredibly meaningful to me”
 
Amy chose to become a nurse after doing a placement at college in a residential care home for people with learning disabilities. She said: “Being able to make a difference and being able to help them out was absolutely lovely.”

During her course with Cardiff University, she spent five months on the Protected Elective Surgical Unit. “I just loved the ward,” she said. “There are a lot of different specialities on the ward. Going from a student to a registered nurse, the team have been absolutely amazing. They are so supportive.”

Being recognised as Health Hero, especially so early in her career, has meant a lot. “Being nominated as a Health Hero is incredibly meaningful. For me, it reflects that I’m very committed to my work and shows my dedication. I strive to bring that to everyone and that’s the reason why I chose this profession.”
