St Barruc's Ward

St Barruc’s is a 20 bed inpatient assessment ward for male and female sufferers of Dementia type illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease or Multi-infarct Dementia (MID). For more information on Alzheimer’s and MID you can visit the Alzheimer's Society and Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) (external websites).

The assessment process on St Barruc’s takes place over a number of weeks depending on individual need. During this time the Primary Nurse and the Multi Disciplinary Team will ascertain a patient's physical, psychological, social and emotional functioning. The Multi Disciplinary Team on St Barruc’s includes:

  • Consultants
  • Ward Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physiotherapist
  • Social Workers
  • Community Nurses
  • Speech and Language Therapists
  • Dieticians
  • Housekeeping staff

The purpose of the assessment is to enable patients to receive an individualised comprehensive plan of care and treatment whilst in hospital and also to be discharged into an environment appropriate to their identified needs.

To enable and support the care team in the delivery of high quality person-centred care, and to assist in the increase of wellbeing, St Barruc’s has a Refocusing Nurse.  The Refocusing Nurse works with the care team to ensure that individual and group activities become an integral part of daily living and care routines. The Refocusing Nurse adopts a life history approach to ensure that a patient’s experience of care is with individual preferences, life styles, interests, values and beliefs.
