Older people, care home residents and those who are immunosuppressed are encouraged to get themselves vaccinated against COVID-19 this spring.
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board launched its COVID-19 spring booster campaign on April 1, 2025, which will run for three months until June 30, 2025.
All those eligible for the free vaccine will be invited to attend a Community Vaccination Centre (CVC) near their home. This campaign, more CVCs have been created within Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to ensure access to the vaccine is easier and more convenient.
The Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that a COVID-19 vaccination should be offered to:
Dino Motti, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, said: “Getting vaccinated is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself against COVID-19 and to avoid passing it onto our loved ones.
“Even if you had the vaccine this winter, new types of the virus can circulate in our communities, and protection wanes over time, so it’s vital to keep up-to-date with your immunisations when they’re offered to you.”
Jennifer Collins was born with the rare blood disorder Neutropenia, which stops her bone marrow from producing enough white blood cells. As a result, she has a weakened immune system and struggles to fight off infections.
She has urged anyone who is immunosuppressed to get their COVID-19 spring booster. “When I get a text or letter to have my next COVID-19 vaccination, I know how important it is to have this because levels of protection may reduce over time since my last one,” she explained.
“I attend every time knowing it will help to protect me for longer, and will help to reduce the risk of me needing to go to hospital due to a possible COVID-19 infection.
“I’d urge anyone who is immunosuppressed to have their vaccination when this is offered, as this is the best defence against any serious illnesses from COVID-19. Every time I attend it's over within minutes, it takes no time at all to help give myself the best chance at staying well.”
