What should I do if I think I have measles?

If you think you have measles:
  • Do not attend your GP, local pharmacy or the Emergency Unit without phoning first so that measures can be put in place to ensure that you can be seen and evaluated without risking spreading it to others
  • Call NHS 111 or your GP for advice
  • Stay home until 4 days after the rash appears.
  • Rest, fluids, and paracetamol/ibuprofen can help ease symptoms.
  • Infants, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems should seek urgent medical advice.

Everyday tips that might help
  • Check you and your child's vaccination history to find out if you are protected - this information can be found in your child's Red Book and/or GP records
  • Get both doses of the MMR vaccine - there is no upper age limit
  • If exposed, seek medical advice quickly - vaccination within 3 days may still provide some protection against serious illness
  • Share accurate information, not rumours.
  • Participate in community or school vaccination clinics.
