Current nurse staffing levels are approximately 97 WTE in post with minimal vacancies. As the unit is affiliated with Cardiff University this provides an ideal opportunity for staff to undergo further specialist training in neonatal nursing.
In total there are 11 senior sisters and one dedicated neonatal technician. The unit offers an "out reach service" whereby babies are visted at home following discharge.
The out reach sisters also run a blood test clinic for those that require further blood tests following discharge.
Five neonatal practise educators facilitate the staff being kept up to date with recent developments within neonatal nursing. There are also 5 special interests groups within the department, including breast feeding and one for the insertion of intravenous lines.
