Provides a routine laboratory service, including tests such as Full Blood Counts, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, and morphology (including parasitology).
The Haematinics department provides a routine laboratory service for testing Ferritin, Vitamin B12, Folate, Erythropoietin, and Intrinsic Factor Antibody.
The Haemoglobinopathies department operates a screening and diagnostic service for Haemoglobin variants and thalassaemia. It aims to provide diagnosis of these conditions with clear recommendations and information for those affected by disorders of haemoglobin, in both the ante-natal and clinical settings. The laboratory also performs investigations into red cell enzyme deficiency, specifically Glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. G6PD is an important enzyme for the maintenance of the red cell membrane; deficiency in this enzyme can lead to serious haemolytic anaemia under certain conditions. The department currently provides primary screening for five of the seven Welsh Health Boards and confirmatory testing for Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board.
Automated coagulation provides a routine coagulation service for internationalised normalised ratio, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time ratio, and D-dimers.
The Haemostasis & Thrombosis section provides a diagnostic and monitoring service for bleeding, bruising, and thrombotic diatheses, either congenital or acquired. It is closely associated with the Cardiff Haemophilia Centre in UHW and provides specialised haemostasis services to South Wales.
Provides Immunophenotyping/flow cytometric diagnosis of haematological disease and accurate cell counting for the Stem Cell Processing Unit and Bone Marrow Transplant teams.
The primary functions are the management of cell or tissue collections, sterile processing, cryopreservation, and storage of haematopoietic stem cells and immunotherapy cells for patient treatment. These products may take the form of autologous or allogeneic peripheral blood or bone marrow stem cells from related or unrelated donors. The section also provides pharmacy liaison, logistic support pre- and post-manufacturing, storage and pre-manufacturing processing for licensed CAR-T products, storage of non-directed clinical trial products, and thawing/preparation of clinical trial products for infusion. Allogeneic post-transplant samples are processed to isolate mononuclear cells or T cells for monitoring of engraftment by PCR or FISH.
