Saving Lives in Cardiff

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board will be returning to screens this spring with a second series of BBC’s Saving Lives in Cardiff, airing on 9 April.

Produced by Label1 for BBC One Wales and BBC Two, Saving Lives in Cardiff was filmed over several months in 2024 across the University Hospital of Wales, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales and University Hospital Llandough.

The programme was granted exclusive access to all three hospitals and follows incredible world-leading surgeons in a candid, behind-the-scenes exploration into their daily lives at work.

The six, hour-long episodes will show the public the difficult decisions clinicians make every day as they choose who to treat next and explore patients’ emotional journeys as they undergo life-changing operations.

Each surgeon offers a rare glimpse into their remarkable and challenging day-to-day lives as they skilfully treat people of all ages – including a heart surgery without the use of a bypass machine, an operation via robotic surgery considered a first-in-Wales for the complexity of a retropharyngeal tumour, and neurosurgery to treat trigeminal neuralgia, a condition causing intense pain the face.

Jason Roberts, Executive Nurse Director, said: "I am delighted Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has been granted another opportunity to display the incredible work our colleagues do every day to treat our patients, both locally and across Wales. The second series of Saving Lives in Cardiff continues to show the complexities behind decision-making and our commitment to delivering safe and effective care. We appreciate no surgery is without its risk and this series shows colleagues acting with professionalism, expertise and compassion, clearly demonstrating the values of the Health Board."
