Patients, colleagues and volunteers at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s Park Road Houses have worked together to transform a piece of disused land into a thriving therapeutic garden, and have been recognised as runners up in the Collaborative Green Space Projects Award at the NHS Forest Awards on 4 October.
The Garden Project @ Park Road has created a safe space where gardening serves as therapy. It is based at Cardiff’s Park Road Houses, a 13 bedded rehabilitation unit where individuals suffering from mental health problems are supported to progress to independent living or supported accommodation.
Work began on the disused land in July 2023 and the space has since been transformed into a thriving green space. Patients, colleagues and volunteers have worked together to build and maintain the garden, and to grow a variety of produce including tomatoes, beans, herbs, and more. The fresh produce is shared with other wards within the mental health community.
It has provided patients at Park Road Houses with an opportunity to connect with nature and witness the growth and fruition of their efforts.
Owen Baglow, Ward Manager at Park Road Houses, said: “This space enhances biodiversity, providing habitats for wildlife while offering a calming environment for patients and staff.”
In January 2024, a nature garden with a pond, wildflower meadow, and 122 native trees were added.
Owen said: “Receiving recognition as a runner-up for the Collaborative Green Space Award means so much to our team. It validates all the hard work and dedication everyone has poured into the project. This award is a testament to the power of collaboration and the positive impact that green spaces can have on mental health and community well-being.
“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and we’re excited to continue growing and nurturing this space for all the patients and staff at Park Road.”
