Local Family Raise Funds for Intensive Care Research

A brilliant local family has raised over £35,000 to fund research into the care of patients who have had an out of hospital cardiac arrest.

Friends and family members of Greg Lloyd have fundraised to honour and remember him, after his tragic and unexpected death from a cardiac arrest in 2022.

Around 120 of Greg’s friends, family members and colleagues ran the Cardiff Half Marathon and raised an unprecedented amount of money for the Critical Care Research Department at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Professor Matt Wise, Critical Care Consultant and UK Chief Investigator for the Stepcare trial explained that “One of the most common reasons for patients to be admitted to critical care is a cardiac arrest. Most patients who survive resuscitation are still unconscious when they get to hospital and require specialist treatment in a critical care unit. During a cardiac arrest blood can stop flowing to the brain properly and this can make it hard to predict if a patient is likely to recover from their cardiac arrest and if they will be left with lasting neurological damage.

“The funds raised by Greg Lloyds family will enable us to purchase a continuous EEG machine, which will look at the brainwaves in patients who have had an out of hospital cardiac arrest. This will help us to determine if they are likely to be suffering from neurological damage and if this could affect their recovery.”

Lucie Barrett, Health Charity Manager said

“This incredible contribution means so much to us and will have a lasting impact on our research. We’re deeply grateful to Louise, her family, and friends for their generosity. It was really lovely to meet with the Lloyd family at our Joint Research Office in Cardiff to thank them and celebrate their fundraising, and let them know how grateful we are. Thank you so much to all involved."
