Why do we have to go to A&E for more serious injuries?

The Minor Injuries Unit is a nurse-led service based at Barry Hospital. Barry Hospital is a Community Hospital and therefore does not have the infrastructure or the specialist medical intervention that an Accident and Emergency Unit would have.

As such, for more serious injuries that require further investigations or more specialist intervention, these are more safely managed at the Emergency Unit. By calling 111 and speaking to a clinician at CAV 24/7, they will be able to undertake an initial assessment over the phone and advise on whether the injury is best managed at a minor injuries unit, or the Emergency Unit.
