Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other new kinds of technology are becoming increasingly important in the delivery of healthcare. This could include a computer scanning test results to look for signs that a human might miss or make mistakes over.
We understand that this is something that people might be concerned about, particularly if it results in decisions about how you are then treated (or not), or if it influences a position on a waiting list. In many cases, an automated process is verified by a human, but if any part of a process is automated, you have specific rights over that process.
You have the right to have automated processing described to you by the Health Board. This should be in enough detail for you to understand the nature of the processing and so that you can exercise your other rights in relation to automated processing. When we use automated processing, we will explain this to you. You do not need to ask for this right as this information should be provided automatically by the Health Board.
You have a right to object to any automated processing that might have a significant effect on you.
You have a right to request that an automated decision is checked by a human where that decision could have a significant impact on you.
In order to ask for these rights to be applied, you will need to contact Cav.ig.Dept@wales.nhs.uk in the first instance.
