Annie Ashman

Deputy Director of Public Health / Consultant in Public Health

Annie joined the Faculty of Public Health specialty training programme in 2019 after a 12-year career in the Public Health Wales communications team, including a period as the Interim Head of Communications. She previously held communications roles in further education and local authority partner organisations in South Wales.
Annie has a Masters degree in Public Health from Cardiff University and also has postgraduate qualifications in journalism, marketing and communications. She is an Associate member of the Institute of Leadership and Management.
She is particularly passionate about reducing health inequalities and making Wales fairer, and in reducing the burden of communicable disease.
Annie is looking forward to taking up her new role with the team and having the opportunity to influence health and wellbeing in the area of Wales where she was born, grew up and still lives.
 

 

Anna Schwappach

Consultant in Public Health Medicine

Anna was appointed as a Consultant in Public Health in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in December 2024, having previously worked in Public Health Wales.

Anna undertook training in public health in both Wales and England, completing a Master’s in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Prior to working in public health, she trained as a General Practitioner in London.

Dino Motti

Consultant in Public Health Medicine

Lead on vaccination, population health management and the health inequities experienced by ethnic minorities

 

Dino qualified at the University of Milan and came to the UK to work as a doctor in the NHS in 2011. He has worked as a medic in Yorkshire, Humberside and London. Dino was awarded his Masters in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He specialised in Public Health in the West Midlands, working with Local Authorities and NHS trusts in Birmingham and the Black Country. During the COVID Pandemic he worked for the health team of the Major of London where he supported award winning efforts to protect the homeless population of the Capital. He was a Consultant in Public Health in the South-West of England before moving to Cardiff in 2023.

Dino has a passion for electronic health records and population health management as a way to enable the shift upstream into prevention.

 

Huw Brunt

Consultant in Public Health

Public Health Team work portfolio includes: lead for smoking/tobacco, screening, prevention integration in primary care and healthcare, and public health communications.

 

Huw Brunt started in post as Consultant in Public Health with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s Public Health Team in August 2025.

Huw brings over 25 years of public health experience to the team, having worked previously in roles across local government, Welsh Government, academia and NHS Wales organisations. Notably, he worked as a specialist public health advisor to the Wales Chief Medical Officer during the COVID-19 pandemic response, and actively supported national policy development and implementation.

Huw has a background in environmental public health and has a specialist interest in health inequalities. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Health (from the University of Wales College of Medicine) and a PhD through which his research focused on air pollution, health risks and inequalities. Huw is a visiting research fellow at University of West of England, Bristol, where he undertook his PhD studies.

Michael Allum

Consultant in Public Health Medicine

Michael was appointed as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in January 2025.

Michael has worked in public health in Wales and England, and has held consultant roles in both local authority and NHS public health teams. Prior to public health, he practiced clinical medicine in South West England.

Michael completed his Master’s in Public Health at the University of Birmingham. He has a particular interest in training and education, and has a postgraduate qualification in medical education from Bristol University.

Suzanne Wood

Consultant in Public Health Medicine

Suzanne was appointed as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine to the Cardiff and Vale Local Public Health Team in July 2012.

Suzanne studied Medicine at Sheffield University and after graduating, worked as a junior doctor. Her interests were very much in global public health, and after this time she pursued a Masters in Development Studies at Leeds University, graduating with Distinction. She went on to develop her interest in mental health through working as a Psychiatrist in both Leeds and Melbourne, Australia. Her career in UK Public Health started by entering the training scheme for East of England, where she graduated with a Masters in Public Health at Cambridge University and worked in three Primary Care Trusts, the Department of Health for East of England and the Department for International Development in London. She was also a member of the Faculty of Public Health’s International Committee during this time; and taught medical students and FY2 doctors Public Health.

Her first Consultant in Public Health Medicine post was in Newham PCT and from here, Suzanne moved to Cardiff and Vale Local Public Health team, now in Cardiff and Vale UHB. She thrives on making a difference to this population and reducing health inequities.

Tom Porter

Consultant in Public Health Medicine

Tom has been a Consultant in Public Health Medicine with the Cardiff and Vale local public health team since 2011. He trained as a doctor in Cambridge and London, and in public health in Oxford. Tom is passionate about climate change and sustainability, in particular making transport systems work for people, to improve physical health and mental wellbeing, reduce inequalities, improve social cohesion and air quality, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Tom worked with Cardiff Council to develop a Clean Air Plan for the city, and on their transport vision to revolutionise how people get around the City. He has led the development of the Healthy Travel Charters, which are rolling out across Wales. In addition to work on sustainable transport, Tom leads on planning and performance within the public health team; on the implementation of the Well-being of Future Generations Act by the Health Board and related sustainability work; and helps supervise trainees on attachment to the team.
