During Sun Awareness Week (3-9 May 2021), we’re highlighting the need for people to seek medical advice if they’re worried about anything on their skin.
Back in 2016, Mr Andersson noticed a mark on his forehead that looked like a spot that kept coming back. Even though he didn’t think too much about the spot, Peter went to visit his GP two months after the mark first appeared.
The GP immediately recognised it as basal cell cancer and referred Peter to hospital where he had a procedure to remove the cells a few months later. However, the cancer returned and Mr Andersson was treated with Mohs micrographic surgery in June 2020.
His advice for others who may notice any marks or spots on their skin? “If you have something wrong with your body then go to your GP, follow appropriate procedures including wearing a mask and get it checked.”
Luckily, Peter received the all clear but his attitude to being out in the sun has changed. He now wears a hat when he’s out and about, even on non-sunny days. For more information on detecting early signs of skin cancer visit the NHS website. Please follow Peter’s advice; if you’re unsure of anything on your skin, please contact your GP.
