Work Experience

A photo collage of different individuals taking part in work experience. One individual works on a computer, another is watching an older colleague and learning.

At present, due to the exceptionally high volume of requests we are receiving, we regret that we are unable to accommodate any work experience placements.  While we greatly value the interest shown in our organisation and recognise the importance of work experience opportunities, particularly for recent graduates and those seeking to broaden their professional exposure, our current capacity does not allow us to fulfil these requests.  This is especially the case for applicants residing outside of our geographical area. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to revisit our website for any future updates should our position change.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is committed to supporting people of all ages who wish to gain insight into the NHS through meaningful, ad‑hoc work experience opportunities. These placements are arranged directly with departments and are designed to help individuals understand the wide range of careers that contribute to delivering high‑quality healthcare across our hospitals and community settings.

We welcome expressions of interest from school and college students, job seekers, career changers, and adults returning to work who want to explore the NHS and develop their skills.

Benefits of Work Experience for Participants

  • Gain insight into a wide range of roles, from clinical to administrative and support services
  • Build confidence, communication and workplace skills
  • Make informed decisions about future study and career pathways
  • Strengthen applications for jobs, apprenticeships or further education

For the Health Board

By offering rich and structured placement experiences, we benefit through:

  • Attracting and inspiring future members of our workforce
  • Supporting the community by improving access to health and care careers
  • Strengthening our talent pipeline in alignment with our long‑term workforce needs
  • Contributing to an engaged, informed future workforce rooted in the local community

This aligns with our organisational mission: Living Well, Caring Well, Working Together, and supports our 10‑year strategy Shaping Our Future Wellbeing, which emphasises sustainability, innovation, developing our people, and preparing the workforce of the future.

Who can apply?

We offer ad‑hoc placements to individuals aged 14 and above (Year 10+) as well as adults of any age who are exploring or returning to healthcare careers. Opportunities vary by department and availability.
