The Emergency Unit (A&E)

The Emergency Unit at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to treat emergency and life-threatening conditions. 

Please call 999 if you, or someone with you, is experiencing a life-threatening emergency or has experienced a major trauma

Medical emergencies include:

  • Chest pain or difficulties breathing
  • Signs of a stroke
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Severe loss of blood
  • Choking
  • Fitting/ convulsions
  • Drowning
  • Severe allergic reactions

If you are not sure whether your condition is an emergency or if your condition is urgent, but not life-threatening, please call 111.  

The 111 call operators will advise you on the right place to get treatment for your condition - this may be the Urgent Out of Hours Service, the Minor Injuries Unit, your GP, your community pharmacy or the Emergency Unit. It is free to call 111.

The Emergency Unit serves a population of almost half a million people across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. There are regularly upwards of 450 patients attending the Emergency Unit each day.
