What is Teledermatology?

Teledermatology is a service that uses clinical photographs to diagnose and manage skin conditions without requiring an in-person consultation. This streamlined approach plays a vital role in early diagnosis, particularly for skin cancer.


Where is your appointment?

Medical Illustration Department – University Hospital of Wales

Location: Main Studio, Upper Ground Floor, A-B Link Corridor

Appointments: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | 09:10 AM – 12:30 PM

Parking: Nearby parking is available in the hospital’s multi-storey car park. Please allow extra time for parking.

Public Transport: The hospital is accessible by bus and train. Please check local services for routes and times.


What to Expect at Your Appointment

Arrival: A Clinical Photographer will explain the procedure and obtain your consent.

Photography: Only the area specified by your GP will be photographed.

Report: A consultant will review your photographs and send a report to you and your GP within 3–4 weeks.

Follow-Up: If you haven’t heard anything after 4 weeks, please contact your GP for updates.


Your Consent and Privacy

Photographs: These will only be used for your medical records or for teaching purposes if you consent.
Consent Levels:

Level 0: Medical records only.

Level 1: Medical records, NHS teaching, and training. If you have concerns or questions, our photographers will be happy to assist.


Key Information

Clothing and Makeup: Avoid makeup, jewellery, or tight clothing over the area being photographed.

Duration: Appointments usually take no more than 10 minutes.

Referral Access: Once your photos are uploaded, we no longer have access to your referral.

 

FAQs

  • Can I bring someone with me? Yes, you may bring a friend or relative. If you prefer a chaperone, please let us know in advance.
  • Do I need to prepare for my appointment? Please avoid wearing makeup, jewellery, or tight clothing that covers the area to be photographed.
  • Will I see a dermatologist at this appointment? No, this is a photography-only appointment. Your images will be reviewed by a dermatologist later.
  • What happens if I haven’t been contacted within 4 weeks? If you haven’t received any communication within 4 weeks, please contact your GP, who can follow up on the referral.
  • Are my photographs kept confidential? Yes, your photographs are securely stored as part of your medical records and used only for purposes you have consented to.
