Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Crohn

Inflammatory bowel disease is an umbrella term used to describe conditions that cause inflammation in the bowel. You may have been told you need Parenteral Support (HPS) as you may have Crohns or complications from a condition called Ulcerative Colitis.

Crohn's disease is a lifelong condition where parts of the digestive system become inflamed. Very rarely, inflammation in the bowel or, surgery to remove the diseased bowel prevents the bowel from absorbing nutrients. Parenteral Support may be required to replenish these nutrients whilst the bowel adapts after a large bowel resection or as temporary support to allow medications to work and IBD symptoms such as obstruction to be resolved.

In extreme cases, where the disease is very progressive and surgery involves the removal of most of the small intestine, HPS may be required permanently.

Ulcerative Colitis is a long-term condition where the large bowel and rectum become inflamed. Small ulcers can form on the lining of the wall which can bleed and produce pus. Very Rarely complications from Ulcerative Colitis can occur such as a blockage in the bowel. If this happens you may require surgery or you may need short term HPS to allow the blockage to resolve. Long-term HPS maybe required in situations where there has been complications after surgery such as fistula’s which are small holes leading from the bowel to an opening in the skin.
