Rehydration Fluids

There are 3 different types of Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) and this will be decided on clinical need and tolerance. You may want to use a straw, drink chilled and flavour with a small amount of sugar free squash to make your drink more enjoyable.

1). Dioralyte - Mix 8 sachets in 1L of water and you should consume throughout the day. This is more than the dose stated on the standard product instructions and is known as double "strength".

2). St Mary's ORS - Mix 100ml in 900mls of water. St Mary's solution can only be obtained from your Nutritional Support team

3). Homemade recipe:

  • 1 litre of water
  • Add 6 level teaspoons (20g) of glucose (sugar)
  • Add 1 level teaspoon (3.5g) of salt
  • Add 2.5g of sodium bicarbonate
  • Add maximum of 25ml sugar-free squash for flavour and stir well
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours
